Best Captains for Crypts in Total Battle

Updated 19 October 2026 · About 5 minutes to read

Only captains can explore crypts, and one of them is built for it. This guide covers why Carter is the captain to use, how far to take him, and how to get more crypts out of a day by sending more than one captain.

In short

  • Carter is the crypt captain. His crypt exploration efficiency and Tar capacity grow with his level.
  • His crypt bonuses stop growing at level 300, even though he can go higher.
  • Other captains can explore crypts, just without crypt bonuses. They're good for low-level crypts.
  • Running three captains at once multiplies how many crypts you explore per hour, as long as you keep them all busy.

Carter, the crypt captain

Carter is the captain with crypt bonuses. His main bonus is crypt exploration efficiency, how much of a crypt one march gets through, and his second is Tar capacity, how much Tar he can carry. Both grow with his level, so a higher Carter clears higher crypts in one march.

You get Carter through Academy research, and his level and stars come from fragments and experience like other captains.

CarterWhat it means for crypts
Main bonusCrypt exploration efficiency: more progress per march
Second bonusTar capacity: more Tar per march
Level capCan be leveled to 500, but crypt bonuses stop growing at 300
Best useThe highest crypt level he clears in one march

Because his bonuses stop at 300, experience beyond that is better spent on other captains. Gear matters as much as level: see the Carter gear guide.

Can other captains explore crypts?

Yes. The crypt card shows the captains you can send, and any free one can go. They just don't have Carter's crypt bonuses, so they get through much less of a crypt per march.

That makes them a good fit for low-level crypts, which every captain can clear in one march. Low crypts give less loot and fewer chest points each, but they're quick and close, and each one still adds a clan chest.

Running three captains at once

With one captain you explore one crypt at a time, and every minute of travel is a minute nothing gets explored. With three, there's almost always someone on the way to a crypt. In our own test with three captains on level 5 Common crypts, that came to about 188 crypts an hour, with march speedups.

A few things make it work:

Doing this by hand is a lot of tapping, which is why it's one of the most automated parts of the game.

Let a bot run your crypts

TB Crypt Auto-Explorer is a Chrome extension that runs the crypt loop for you. It sets the Watchtower filter, sends Carter (or three captains at once) to the nearest crypt of the type and level you pick, speeds up the march with your own speedups, and sends him out again the moment he's home. In 3 Captains mode it sends all your free captains, never two to the same crypt, at about 188 crypts an hour. It never buys Tar or anything else.

It runs in a side panel next to the game, sets up in a minute, and the first hour is free.

Bots are against Total Battle's rules, so using one is at your own risk.

FAQ

Who is the best captain for crypts in Total Battle?

Carter. He's the captain with crypt bonuses: crypt exploration efficiency and Tar capacity, both growing with his level.

What level should Carter be for crypts?

As high as you can get him up to 300. His crypt bonuses stop growing at level 300, even though he can be leveled further.

Can other captains explore crypts?

Yes, any captain can be sent to a crypt, but without Carter's crypt bonuses. They work well on low-level crypts that they can clear in one march.

How many crypts can you do with three captains?

It depends on the crypt level, distance and speedups. With three captains on level 5 Common crypts and march speedups, we measured about 188 crypts an hour.
