Total Battle Crypts: Types, Levels and Rewards
Crypts are one of the steadiest sources of crafting materials, gems and clan chests in Total Battle. This guide covers every crypt type, which levels you can explore and when, what each rarity drops, and how many clan chest points a crypt is worth.
In short
- There are three rarities: Common, Rare and Epic. Each uses its own Tar.
- Common crypts (levels 5–25) drop materials for regular equipment. Rare crypts (10–30) need a key and drop gems. Epic crypts (15–35) drop materials for unique equipment.
- Every finished crypt gives your clan a chest. Higher levels and rarer crypts give more points.
- Only captains can explore crypts, and Carter is the one with crypt bonuses.
- The Watchtower lists crypts near you and lets you filter by type and level.
What crypts are
Crypts are buildings on the Kingdom map that you explore instead of fight. Nothing defends them, so you don't lose troops. You send a captain, he spends Tar to explore the crypt, and when the crypt is fully explored you get its loot and your clan gets a chest.
Each crypt has a level and a rarity. The higher the level, the more Tar it takes to explore it fully and the more it gives back. A strong captain can clear a crypt in one march. A weaker one needs several trips, and every trip costs time and Tar.
Finding crypts with the Watchtower
The Watchtower lists the crypts around your city, nearest first. Open it, go to Crypts and Arenas, and use the filter at the top to pick a rarity (Common, Rare, Epic, Arenas or Others) and a level range. Pressing Go moves the map to that crypt, and tapping the crypt opens its card.
The crypt card shows what the crypt can drop, which captains are free and how long the march takes. You can explore with the plain Explore button or with Bonus +10%, which costs more Tar.
Crypt types
Every crypt belongs to one of three rarities. They use different Tar, need different research and drop different things.
| Rarity | Levels | Uses | Drops | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 5–25 | Tar | Materials for regular equipment | Nothing extra |
| Rare | 10–30 | Rare Tar | Gems for crafted equipment | Crypts II research and a key of the same level |
| Epic | 15–35 | Epic Tar | Materials for unique equipment | Crypts III research |
Each kind of Tar only works for its own rarity. Common and Epic crypts also have a chance to drop two of their materials instead of one. Rare crypts don't.
Common crypts and their materials
There are twelve Common crypts. Each one drops its own crafting material, so if you need a specific material, pick the crypt that drops it.
| Crypt | Material | Crypt | Material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adamantium | Adamant Shard | Fates | Runic Thread |
| Cobra | Enchanted Leather | Fire | Green Dragon Scale |
| Desert | Royal Griffin Hide | Imperial | Imperial Silk |
| Dwarven | Old Gnome Cogwheel | Inferno | Magma Coal |
| Phantom | Phantom Iron Shard | Skull | Ashen Hydra Hide |
| Siren | Siren Tears | Thorian | Thorium Ore |
Rare crypts
Rare crypts are where the gems come from, which is the main reason to run them. There are two kinds, Dracorne and Geodrake. Each one needs a key of the crypt's level. You get keys by capturing an Elven Citadel of that level, and they are also sold in the Fenrir's Invasion shop during Ragnarok. Wait until your captain can clear a level 15 Rare crypt in one march, ideally a 20, so the keys aren't wasted on several trips.
Epic crypts
There are seventeen Epic crypts, each with a named material for unique equipment:
| Crypt | Material | Crypt | Material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abandoned | Bone Infusion | Harpy | Harpy Feather |
| Ancient | Ancient Moss | Horrors | Batwing |
| Ancient Warrior | Bronze Ingot | Minos | Minotaur's Horn |
| Bastion | Black Glass | Pyramid | Ancient Calx |
| Beast | Beast Skin | Scarab | Ancient Scarab |
| Cobalt | Enchanted Cobalt | Scorpion | Scorpion Poison |
| Crimson | Scarlet Silk | Titanium | Titansteel |
| Elven | Elven Rope | Trillium | Unprocessed Trillium |
| Turtle | Old Shell |
Epic crypts take far more Tar than Common or Rare ones. A common rule is to wait until you can clear a level 25 Common crypt in one march before you start on Epics.
Crypt levels and research
You start with level 5 crypts. The Crypts research in the Academy's Archeology branch unlocks the next levels in steps of five:
| Research | Highest crypt level | Also unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| None | 5 | |
| Crypts II | 10 | Rare crypts |
| Crypts III | 15 | Epic crypts |
| Crypts IV | 20 | |
| Crypts V | 25 | |
| Crypts VI | 30 | |
| Crypts VII | 35 |
Being allowed to explore a level doesn't mean it's worth it yet. The best level is the highest one your captain clears in a single march. One level higher that takes two marches usually gives less per hour.
Rewards and clan chest points
Besides the materials or gems, every finished crypt puts a clan chest in your clan's chest list. Clans often track chest points, and crypts are one of the easiest ways to earn them. These are the points players report per crypt:
| Level | Common | Rare | Epic |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 13 | – | – |
| 10 | 35 | 66 | – |
| 15 | 75 | 130 | 75 |
| 20 | 167 | 319 | 598 |
| 25 | 550 | 800 | 1,000 |
| 30 | – | 1,200 | 1,184 |
| 35 | – | – | 1,484 |
Player-reported values. Clans may score chests differently.
The jump from level 20 to 25 is big: a level 25 Common crypt is worth more than three level 20 ones. Rare crypts are worth about one and a half to two times a Common crypt of the same level, and Epic crypts are worth the most at levels 20 and 25.
How to farm crypts faster
The short version is below. The full guide is How to farm crypts faster.
- Use Carter. He is the captain with crypt bonuses: his exploration efficiency and Tar capacity grow with his level. Players report that these bonuses stop growing at level 300.
- Clear in one march. Pick the highest level Carter clears in one go. Exploration efficiency only saves Tar when it removes a whole trip.
- Set your bonuses before you send him. Crypt captains apply their bonuses when the march starts. Premium players can set the Great Archaeologist title for crypt efficiency and march speed, and Archeology talents for efficiency and cost help on every run.
- Stay close. By default a march to a crypt can take at most 20 minutes, and every minute on the road is a minute not exploring. Work through the nearest crypts first and use march speedups when you have them.
- Keep it going. The biggest loss is the gap between marches: Carter comes home and nobody sends him back out for half an hour. That gap is what adds up over a day.
Let a bot run your crypts
TB Crypt Auto-Explorer is a Chrome extension that does the crypt loop for you. It sets the Watchtower filter, sends Carter (or three captains at once) to the nearest crypt of the type and level you choose, speeds up the march with your own speedups, and sends him out again the moment he's home. It never buys Tar or anything else. With three captains it runs about 188 crypts an hour.
It runs in the side panel next to the game, sets up in a minute, and the first hour is free.

FAQ
How many crypt types are there in Total Battle?
Three rarities: Common, Rare and Epic. Each rarity has its own named crypts, like Desert, Fire or Phantom for Common, and uses its own kind of Tar.
What level crypts can I explore?
Level 5 without research. The Crypts research in the Academy unlocks higher levels in steps of five, up to 35. Common crypts go up to 25, Rare run from 10 to 30 and Epic from 15 to 35.
How do I get keys for Rare crypts?
Capture an Elven Citadel of the same level as the crypt. Keys are also sold in the Fenrir's Invasion shop during Ragnarok.
Which captain is best for crypts?
Carter. He's the captain with crypt exploration bonuses, and they grow with his level.
Can crypts be explored automatically?
Yes. TB Crypt Auto-Explorer is a Chrome extension that sets the filter, sends your captains and uses speedups for you. Bots are against the game's rules, so it's your call.
